Cemeteries in Donhead St Andrew  

There are two Cemeteries in the Parish of Donhead St Andrew, the first (original) is in the grounds of the Church of St Andrew, the second is on Lower Street.

St Andrew's Churchyard:

  • St Andrew's is owned and managed by the Church of England, it is the land immediately surrounding St Andrew's Church on St Bartholomew's Street. 
  • The Churchyard is now full, but it is still able to offer interment for Ashes
  • Please contact the Churchwardens directly for any Ashes interment enquires - Website 

Lower Street Cemetery:

  • This Cemetery is owned and managed by the Parish Council, it is on Lower Street on the other side of the road to The Forester Pub
  • The Cemetery has some space left for interments of parishioners (inc Ashes)
  • Please contact the Parish Clerk directly
  • The Cemetery has been open since 1896

What is a Parish Council?

There are approximately 8,500 Parish / Town Councils in England, most Parish / Town Councils were established in 1894 by an Act of Parliament, creating civil parishes that are quite distinct from those of the Church.
The most effective Parish / Town Councils have Councillors and a Parish / Town Clerk that work as a team to provide a service to the community.

What does the Parish Council do?

The Parish Council represents the interests of the whole community; these can be diverse and discovering the needs of different groups is an important part of the work of each and every Parish Councillor. Occasionally there will be a conflict of interest between the groups within the Village and making difficult decisions in an open and reasoned way is something that all Parish Councils must do well. Consultation with the Residents is therefore a very important tool.

Powers and Duties

The Council has powers and duties to help the community to thrive. The Council must not do anything unless it has the legal power to act, granted by law. Councillors must therefore always ask the question "Does the council have a legal power to act?". This is especially important when spending public money.
